Mobility Scooter Types

October 17, 2008

People find that are over sixty often have difficulty walking around. Factors, such as arthritis are often things that can make getting around much more difficult. Not being able to safely or easily get around, can mean there are likely many events that you can not goto. Be it shopping or going to the park with the grandkids, if you have difficulty walking, there are a lot of things that can be out of reach. This is one of the reasons that mobility scooters are very popular.

Mobility scooters are a type of personal vehicle that is designed to carry a person indoors and outdoors. They are controlled by a set of handlebars, which are mounted on the front of the scooter and have 3 or 4 wheels.

If the scooter has 3 wheels, it will be much more maneuverable than a 4 wheeled scooter. They have a smaller turning radius, so if you need something for use around the home, a 3 wheeled scooter might be a better choice. However, 4 wheeled scooters offer superior stability and weight capacity. This makes them a better choice for outdoor use. Most heavy duty scooters, which are designed to be driven pretty much anywhere, use 4 wheels.

The range of a scooter varies, by model. It can vary between 5 and 40 miles. Most, however, have a range of around 12 miles per charge. This can be affected by the way and places you drive it. For instance driving up a steep hill will reduce the battery life.

Using a mobility scooter is a great way to increase mobility and allow independent movement in most areas. They are generally easy to control and greatly improve the life style of many individuals.

Electric Scooters

October 3, 2008

Not being able to walk around freely is something that can make life very difficult for some individuals. There are a lot of things in life that require walking and not being able to walk for extended periods of time is something that can negatively effect peoples lives. This is the reason that many individuals who are mobility challenged use electric scooters.

An electric scooter is a mobility aid that carries a single rider over indoor and outdoor areas. These scooters use either 3 or 4 wheels. The ones with 3 wheels tend to be better for use indoors, because they can turn in very tight quarters. The 4 wheeled scooters can not turn in as tight of a circle, but they are more stable, which makes them a better choice for outdoor usage.

These scooters plug directly into the wall to charge and then are powered off of an on-board battery. The range varies, but most full sized scooters can travel at least ten miles on a charge. Travel scooters, which are designed to be light weight and taken apart easily, usually have a reduced range and fewer features, but can be quickly placed in the trunk of a car or even in the back seat.

Those that are not able to easily get around, find that these scooters make a big difference in their daily life. Using and controlling them is simple and often can be done with very little hand control.

Finding the Right Scooter

September 26, 2008

Walking around often becomes more difficult with age. Arthritis is often the culprit that leads to this difficulty, but there are many other disorders that can reduce a person’s ability to get around. This can greatly limit where you go and how you get there. For almost fifty years, people have used mobility scooters to make it easier to get around.

The electric wheelchair was first mass produced during the 1950’s. Several years later during the 1960’s, the first mobility scooter was created. Today, people of all ages use and rely on their scooter to get around the home, the grocery store, the mall, and many other places.

A mobility scooter is similar to a wheelchair, but it uses a more spread out design and is controlled by a set of handlebars that are located on the front of the scooter. They use electric power and depending on the type of scooter, some are able to travel more than 40 miles without needing to recharge.

Most of the scooters available are designed for indoor and outdoor use, but are mostly meant to be driven over flat easy terrain. They usually do admirably across grass, but very loose soil and sand can be a problem. If you need something you can take pretty much anywhere, you might wish to go for a heavy duty scooter. Heavy Duty Scooters are much larger and have a much higher top speed. They are made to be driven over almost any type of terrain, but since they are so big, they tend to be a little cumbersome when used inside of most homes.

Whatever type you decide to get, make sure you do a little research on it before you go. It is a good idea to think about where you are going to use the scooter, because this will help you narrow down what one will work best for you.

Getting Around with a Heavy Duty Scooter

September 19, 2008

Walking around freely is something that can be made more difficult after the onset of arthritis. This is why so many people use mobility scooters.

Mobility scooters are personal vehicles that can carry a person pretty much anywhere. While these devices are designed for indoor or outdoor use, not all are designed to be used over rough and uneven ground. If you need one that can handle the horse pasture just as well as it handles a paved parking lot, you might want to invest in a heavy duty mobility scooter.

These models are much larger than regular scooters and can be driven pretty much anywhere. They feature a higher ground clearance, larger tires, and a strong suspension system. In addition they can usually support over 500 pounds and have a very high top speed and range.

While these scooters are great and can be driven pretty much anywhere, they have a fairly high turning radius, which can make them hard to use in tight quarters. This means that if you intend to use it indoors, you will need to have a fairly open area. They are great for going to the mall or pretty much any store, but around the home, things can get pretty tight.

Not only are heavy duty mobility scooters excellent for getting around outdoors, they are also very fun to drive and extremely comfortable.

Different Types of Scooters for Different Types of People

September 12, 2008

Using a mobility scooter is a great way to improve mobility. There are many things in life that can make it difficult to walk, perhaps age is the most common reason, but there are many others, including Arthritis, muscular sclerosis, or even cognitive disorders like Alzheimers. Whatever the reason, if you can not walk easily, then you are at a disadvantage.

People of all ages are currently using mobility scooters. The type of scooter that you purchase should be based off of what you need the scooter to do and where you need it to go. This is because not all scooters are designed the same. Some are made to be used outdoors on the farm and others are meant primarily for indoor use. Finding one that has been built to fulfill your needs is iatrical in improving your mobility.

For those that intend to mostly use their scooter indoors and over tightly packed ground, a 3 wheeled scooter could very well be the best choice. These scooters have a very small turning radius that makes them incredibly maneuverable.

If you need to support more weight or be able to more comfortably travel over rough terrain, then you might wish to go with a 4 wheel scooter. 4 wheeled scooters more evenly distribute the weight of the scooter and its rider out, which helps improve stability and balance. While they might not be as maneuverable as their 3 wheeled cousins, they can still be used indoors.

If you need a 4 wheel drive rugged mobility scooter that can be used in almost any outdoor situation, then a heavy duty scooter might be the best choice. These scooters have larger tires, higher ground clearance, improved suspension, and many other features that make it superior for outdoor use. These scooters have a much larger turning radios though and are much larger in size. This means that even though they can be used indoors, they might not do as well in tight quarters as other scooters.

Some Types of Mobility Scooters

September 5, 2008

It is not always easy for people with mobility related problems to walk around. Many times these difficulties are as a result of Arthritis or neuromuscular diseases that make walking difficult and even sometimes painful. As a walking aid, many people choose to use mobility scooters, which are a special kind of personal vehicle.

A mobility scooter can be used indoor or out, but not all scooters perform the same. It is a great idea to write a list of all the places where you will be using the scooter. Make note of the type of terrain you will be driving over, such as dirt, sand, grass, or pavement. After you have made the list, you will have a better idea of what you need from your scooter.

If you found that you will mostly be using the scooter indoors or over paved areas, then a 3-wheeled scooter will probably be a good choice. A 3-wheeled scooter is great for indoor use because it is highly maneuverable, but it doesn’t support as much weight or handle uneven terrain as well.

If you found that you need a combination of indoor and outdoor terrain, you might be better off with a 4-wheeled scooter, which offers superior stability and increased weight capacity. It is not as maneuverable though, so will not do as well in tight quarters. People that need to go over rugged, uneven, and loose terrain will probably want to go with a heavy duty scooter, which offers superior stability, weight support, and can be driven almost anywhere.

Buying a New Mobility Scooter Online

August 29, 2008

Many people who suffer from arthritis find that it is difficult to walk around for an extended period of time. Of course there are many other diseases that can make walking around difficult, but arthritis is one of the more common. Across the country, millions of Americans have discovered the freedom and independence a mobility scooter can bring.

A mobility scooter is a type of device that can carry a person around the house or around the town. A seat is mounted towards the rear of the scooter and a set of handlebars are used to control the device. They use battery power, which makes them safe to use indoors, and many can travel over 20 miles on a single charge. The speed at which an electric mobility scooter can travel varies, but most travel around 4 or 5 miles per hour and some can go much faster.

Finding a mobility scooter is usually best done online. It is possible to buy used scooters, but this is seldom recommended, because you are taking a big risk when you buy it used and you will probably not get a warranty with your purchase. Instead it is better to go with a new scooter, so that you are assured that the device is in excellent condition.

Some dealers do sell used scooter and buying one from them is a little better, because these dealers will inspect the scooter and fix any major or noticeable problems. Usually though you don’t really save enough money that it is worth the risk. It is usually easy to find a great deal on a new scooter and many companies also offer coupons with their scooters.

Mobility Scooters Have Been Banned From the Metro!

August 27, 2008

Mobility scooters have finally been banned from the Tyne and Wear Metro after two serious accidents.

During one accident, an elderly woman crashed through trand doors and onto a Metro track after boarding a train at South Tyneside late last year. Also earlier this year in April, a man fell from his vehicle prompting a track. Operator Nexus basically became fed up and said that it was extending the ban and all users could not used the Metro from Wednesday.

Nexus said that the scooters were too dangerous; however, the rule will be reviewed in six months. Manual and powered wheelchairs are not included in this ban.

Using Mobility Scooters

August 22, 2008

People who suffer from mobility related diseases, such as arthritis, commonly find it difficult to walk for an extended period of time. This can make things like going to the grocery store or visiting the mall very difficult. As an aid to walking, many people use mobility scooters.

A mobility scooter is similar to a wheelchair, but has some differences. One of the major differences is how the device is controlled. Most electric wheelchairs use a joystick control system that is mounted on the armrest and can be configured for left or right hand use. The device can be controlled by only a finger and alternate control methods are also available, which do not require the user to use their hands at all. A mobility scooter on the other hand uses a handle bar control system that is mounted onto the front of the scooter. The handlebars are similar in some ways to those you would find on a motorcycle or bike. The controller can usually be operated by only a finger, but the steering is usually done with two hands.

In addition to having a slightly different control system, the seating system of a mobility scooter is also different from a wheelchair. The seat on a mobility scooter is mounted on the rear of the device, where the seat on a wheelchair is mounted more towards the middle of the wheelchair.

Using a mobility scooter is a great way to make those everyday trips much easier and if you take it on vacation, you are able to keep up with your family.

Using a Mobility Scooter to Increase Mobility

August 15, 2008

It is often not so easy for people who are sufferers of neuromuscular diseases or those affected by arthritis to walk around. It might be possible to move around short distances, but over extended distances, walking around often proves to be too difficult for those afflicted by these types of health problems. To help make it easier to get around, millions, if not billions, of people all over the world rely on mobility scooters to retain their independence.

A mobility scooter is an electric personal vehicle that is designed to carry a single person over terrain that is located indoors and out. Some are better suited at traveling over rough terrain than others, but most will be able to travel over concrete and well packed ground. The range that a mobility scooter has varies by model, but most are capable of traveling between 8 and 10 miles on a single charge. Some environmental factors, such as steep hills or the weight of the rider can affect the scooters range though, so to get the most out of your scooter it is advised to plan your trip in a manner that avoids exceptionally steep hills unless absolutely necessary.

In addition to avoiding steep areas and not exceeding the scooters weight capacity, properly charging your battery is also an important part of getting the most range out of your scooter. A mobility scooter that is used regularly, but not charged regularly, will not get the optimal range and this can cause the battery to wear out faster.

People who use a mobility scooter are able to go places that their feet might not be able to carry them and are able to keep up with their family on public outings.
