Mobility Scooter Components

October 15, 2007

Mobility scooters today are all electric battery powered. They have a battery that is stored under the seat, some scooters may even have two batteries depending on the model. These batteries can be charged via a standard wall outlet and some even have onboard chargers which make it very convenient. Most of these batteries last a good while before needing to be recharged. This can range from 20 miles on upwards of 32 miles before needing to be recharged again.

Besides the battery components, a mobility scooter consists of a seat that is over the two rear wheels, a flat area for your feet and handlebars in the front that are used to steer. Some scooter models even have a seat that can swivel to allow access when the front is blocked by the handlebars.

The handlebars that are used for steering, also known as a tiller, will have forward and reverse direction controls, as well as speed controls. The actual type of device used can vary, but will typically be thumb paddles, finger controls or a switch. Mobility scooters are an easy device to learn to use and can be a great asset for a persons mobility challenges.
