The Right Mobility Scooter

December 17, 2007

People with limited mobility have been given the opportunity for more independence with the use of electric mobility scooters. These helpful scooters come in a variety of styles and brands, and at times may sometimes be difficult to determine which mobility scooter will best suit your needs. Having some knowledge of the factors involved in the decision will help you to know which mobility scooter is best for you.

One thing to consider when purchasing a mobility scooter is your weight. While all mobility scooters are designed for optimal weight handling, smaller scooters are designed to handle up to about 250 pounds, while heavy duty scooters are designed to handle on upwards of 400 pounds or more. Knowing the weight restrictions can be a big factor in determining the best suitable mobility scooter.

Another thing to consider is your height. Portable travel scooters are excellent for traveling because of their small size and light weight. These scooters can also be taken apart or folded and are easy to fit in a lot of places. However, these small scooters have little leg room and will not be very comfortable for a taller person. If you plan to use the mobility scooter frequently, you should consider the comfort level that larger, more expensive models offer. This is especially true if you have any problems with your knees or legs. If you are not a very tall person, and do a lot of traveling then a smaller scooter model could be very suitable.

Electric mobility scooters come in three and four wheel configurations and is the next thing you should consider. Each type has their own advantages. Three wheel mobility scooters are excellent for traveling around indoors and have excellent turning radius’s and can make tight turns. If you plan on using your mobility scooter outdoors frequently though, a four wheel scooter would be a better choice as they are better designed for outdoor use. Four wheel scooters offer much more stability over a three wheel scooter, so if you plan to be outside in hilly or rocky areas then a four wheel scooter would be better suited for you.

Knowing how and where you will use your mobility scooter will help tremendously with the decision on which one you need. You can discuss your requirements with a company representative or salesperson if you need help in deciding. They can help to ensure that you choose the most appropriate model for your needs.
