The Importance of Mobility Scooters

July 31, 2008

Sometimes we take the simple act of walking for granted. We tend to forget that there are many people who suffer from different diseases. There are also many elderly people who can’t move there limbs as freely as they would like and don’t have the endurance to keep afoot. Mobility scooters are a great benefit for people who have to constantly undergo this daily ordeal.

A mobility scooter is very similar to that of a wheelchair, only it is battery powered and doesn’t require the use of using your arms to move the device. It is battery powered, which makes it usable in different locations, whether indoors or outdoors depending on the model that one purchased. Many of these scooters are able to cover great distances per charge.

There are three main types of scooters: 4-wheeled scooters, 3-wheeled scooters, and travel scooters. I will mainly focus on travel scooters and 4-wheeled scooters. A travel scooter is very light compared to most scooters and be handled quite easily. They can be broken down and stored away without any problems compared to the other two. The fact that it is the lightest and can be broken down so easily can also be a disadvantage; there are fewer features, moves at a lower speed, and has reduced range.

The 4-wheeled electric scooter has a great turning range (larger than a 3-wheeled electric scooter), has great suspension, and can support a great deal of weight (if it is a heavy duty scooter). It is also great to use outdoors because of its ability maneuver through an uneven terrain.

A mobility scooter is a very good product to own if one is unable to move freely, if you have limited mobility. It is a great device that allows people to travel short distances at their own freewill.

Mobility Scooters

Walking around is something that is often done with ease when we are younger, but as we age, it becomes increasingly difficult to get around. Often walking for extended periods of time is not possible, which can make going to the store or on vacation very difficult. For those who can not walk with ease anymore, a mobility scooter can be a great type of mobility aid.

Mobility scooters are a personal mobility vehicle that can be used around the home or in outdoor situations. This type of mobility vehicle is battery powered, but due to advances in technology, many have very impressive ranges. Some can travel over 40 miles on a single charge, but most have a range between 10 and 20 miles. Usually they travel at speeds of between 4 and 10 miles per hour, but other factors, like the riders weight and the terrain, can effect the speed of the mobility scooter.

Most often these devices do not require too much maintenance. Battery care is probably the most important consideration. You will want to periodically check the connections and ensure that there is no corrosion on the mobility scooter. Maintaining a proper charging schedule is also essential to ensure extended battery life. Charging it too much or not enough can lead the battery to wear out much quicker.

There are many reasons that you might not be able to walk with ease any more. Age is only one factor, many people who have been injured, suffer from arthritis, or neuromuscular diseases also use mobility scooters to improve their mobility and range.

A mobility scooter can help to make you feel better about yourself and keep you active, so if you can not walk easily, you should consider an investment in mobility and purchase an electric scooter.

Mobility Scooter Safety Accessories

Mobility scooters are used by many people old and young who have difficulty walking. A mobility scooter is a device that is similar to an electric wheelchair, but has a different sitting position. Depending on the model, some electric scooters can travel well over 40 miles per charge, so it is no surprise that many people use their mobility scooter to get around town.

The freedom that a scooter gives people is in many cases unparallel. Without mobility scooters many mobility challenged people, like those with spinal cord problems, might not be able to get around, but it is important to be safe when using a mobility scooter in public.

If you intend to use your mobility scooter around town, you will want to make sure you have a scooter that has a full lighting package, including taillights. Some scooters, called travel scooters, are designed to be taken apart easily for storage, but travel scooters frequently have fewer features than other scooters. If you decide you need a travel scooter, it is a good idea to invest in one that has running lights if you intend to use it around town or alongside roads.

You will also want to invest in side view mirrors. Most dealers can provide you with mirrors, but you can usually find them at bike shops as well. It is also a good idea to install a visibility flag and to wear white colors if you are traveling alongside a road. It can be hard for people driving cars and trucks to see a person driving a mobility scooter, and the flag and light colors can help you become more visible.

A mobility scooter is device that can greatly restore your freedom and allow you to go places that you thought were not possible, but if you are going to be using it in areas where you might encounter automobile traffic you will want to take measures to stay safe.

Electric Scooters Explained

Walking around can be difficult for people who are older or suffer from mobility related problems. This includes things like osteoarthritis, but often people just do not have the stamina they once did and are not able to walk for extended periods. Mobility scooters are one type of mobility device that can make it much easier for these people to get around.

A mobility scooter is a special type of mobility vehicle that is similar to a wheelchair. These battery powered units are able to be used indoors and outdoors, but depending on the model, some are not as well suited to be used over uneven ground. Many of these scooters are able to cover great distances per charge. Some can even travel over 50 miles before needing to be plugged in.

If you are intending to use your scooter outdoors, you will probably want to get a 4 wheeled electric scooter. 4 wheeled scooters offer superior stability when compared to their 3 wheeled relatives. This stability does come at a cost though, because they tend to have a larger turning radius than 3 wheeled scooters do. Many heavy duty scooters are available that can support a good deal of weight, have improved suspension, and higher ground clearance. This makes these excellent choices for traversing rough or uneven terrain. Most heavy duty scooters utilize a 4 wheeled design.

Another popular type of scooter is the travel scooter. It is very lightweight and can be broken down into a few smaller pieces that can be handled and stored easily. The downside to a travel scooter though is that they have fewer features, a reduced range, and a lower speed and weight rating.

A mobility scooter is a very good product to use if you have limited mobility, but are still able to walk for short distances. If you are unable to walk, then you would want to use an electric wheelchair, which offers a different seating arrangement that makes it easier to sit at tables or desks.
