Finding the Right Scooter

September 26, 2008

Walking around often becomes more difficult with age. Arthritis is often the culprit that leads to this difficulty, but there are many other disorders that can reduce a person’s ability to get around. This can greatly limit where you go and how you get there. For almost fifty years, people have used mobility scooters to make it easier to get around.

The electric wheelchair was first mass produced during the 1950’s. Several years later during the 1960’s, the first mobility scooter was created. Today, people of all ages use and rely on their scooter to get around the home, the grocery store, the mall, and many other places.

A mobility scooter is similar to a wheelchair, but it uses a more spread out design and is controlled by a set of handlebars that are located on the front of the scooter. They use electric power and depending on the type of scooter, some are able to travel more than 40 miles without needing to recharge.

Most of the scooters available are designed for indoor and outdoor use, but are mostly meant to be driven over flat easy terrain. They usually do admirably across grass, but very loose soil and sand can be a problem. If you need something you can take pretty much anywhere, you might wish to go for a heavy duty scooter. Heavy Duty Scooters are much larger and have a much higher top speed. They are made to be driven over almost any type of terrain, but since they are so big, they tend to be a little cumbersome when used inside of most homes.

Whatever type you decide to get, make sure you do a little research on it before you go. It is a good idea to think about where you are going to use the scooter, because this will help you narrow down what one will work best for you.

Getting Around with a Heavy Duty Scooter

Walking around freely is something that can be made more difficult after the onset of arthritis. This is why so many people use mobility scooters.

Mobility scooters are personal vehicles that can carry a person pretty much anywhere. While these devices are designed for indoor or outdoor use, not all are designed to be used over rough and uneven ground. If you need one that can handle the horse pasture just as well as it handles a paved parking lot, you might want to invest in a heavy duty mobility scooter.

These models are much larger than regular scooters and can be driven pretty much anywhere. They feature a higher ground clearance, larger tires, and a strong suspension system. In addition they can usually support over 500 pounds and have a very high top speed and range.

While these scooters are great and can be driven pretty much anywhere, they have a fairly high turning radius, which can make them hard to use in tight quarters. This means that if you intend to use it indoors, you will need to have a fairly open area. They are great for going to the mall or pretty much any store, but around the home, things can get pretty tight.

Not only are heavy duty mobility scooters excellent for getting around outdoors, they are also very fun to drive and extremely comfortable.

Different Types of Scooters for Different Types of People

September 12, 2008

Using a mobility scooter is a great way to improve mobility. There are many things in life that can make it difficult to walk, perhaps age is the most common reason, but there are many others, including Arthritis, muscular sclerosis, or even cognitive disorders like Alzheimers. Whatever the reason, if you can not walk easily, then you are at a disadvantage.

People of all ages are currently using mobility scooters. The type of scooter that you purchase should be based off of what you need the scooter to do and where you need it to go. This is because not all scooters are designed the same. Some are made to be used outdoors on the farm and others are meant primarily for indoor use. Finding one that has been built to fulfill your needs is iatrical in improving your mobility.

For those that intend to mostly use their scooter indoors and over tightly packed ground, a 3 wheeled scooter could very well be the best choice. These scooters have a very small turning radius that makes them incredibly maneuverable.

If you need to support more weight or be able to more comfortably travel over rough terrain, then you might wish to go with a 4 wheel scooter. 4 wheeled scooters more evenly distribute the weight of the scooter and its rider out, which helps improve stability and balance. While they might not be as maneuverable as their 3 wheeled cousins, they can still be used indoors.

If you need a 4 wheel drive rugged mobility scooter that can be used in almost any outdoor situation, then a heavy duty scooter might be the best choice. These scooters have larger tires, higher ground clearance, improved suspension, and many other features that make it superior for outdoor use. These scooters have a much larger turning radios though and are much larger in size. This means that even though they can be used indoors, they might not do as well in tight quarters as other scooters.

Some Types of Mobility Scooters

It is not always easy for people with mobility related problems to walk around. Many times these difficulties are as a result of Arthritis or neuromuscular diseases that make walking difficult and even sometimes painful. As a walking aid, many people choose to use mobility scooters, which are a special kind of personal vehicle.

A mobility scooter can be used indoor or out, but not all scooters perform the same. It is a great idea to write a list of all the places where you will be using the scooter. Make note of the type of terrain you will be driving over, such as dirt, sand, grass, or pavement. After you have made the list, you will have a better idea of what you need from your scooter.

If you found that you will mostly be using the scooter indoors or over paved areas, then a 3-wheeled scooter will probably be a good choice. A 3-wheeled scooter is great for indoor use because it is highly maneuverable, but it doesn’t support as much weight or handle uneven terrain as well.

If you found that you need a combination of indoor and outdoor terrain, you might be better off with a 4-wheeled scooter, which offers superior stability and increased weight capacity. It is not as maneuverable though, so will not do as well in tight quarters. People that need to go over rugged, uneven, and loose terrain will probably want to go with a heavy duty scooter, which offers superior stability, weight support, and can be driven almost anywhere.
